This Synvisc product is an injection for relief of osteoarthritis symptoms such as inflammation and pain. This medical device is an injectable made of sodium hyaluronate, and it is also called Hylan G-F 20. Sodium hyaluronate is found throughout the body including in the knee joint and other joints, and the sodium hyaluronate in it comes from chicken combs.

Osteoarthritis can be a debilitating disease, but this product can help reduce pain and inflammation. This orthopedic injectable can supplement or replace other osteoarthritis treatments that have stopped working, such as pain medication, physiotherapy, and exercise, and it can help patients delay knee surgery.

Its advantage over other osteoarthritis injections such as SYNVISC® is that it requires only one injection instead of three or more to provide full osteoarthritis relief. This can be helpful for patients that find returning each week for multiple injections to be inconvenient.

Osteoarthritis is the degradation of cartilage in the joint, often happening with age, repetitive stress, injury, or obesity. Osteoarthritis is also associated with the degradation of synovial fluid, which is the fluid that is normally present in the knee joint to provide lubrication and a cushion. With little protection in the knee joint, there is friction as the bones move, causing inflammation and pain. When you inject this Synvisc solution directly into your patient’s knee joint, the sodium hyaluronate fluid provides a similar function as the synovial fluid, lubricating and cushioning the joint as your patient moves. This reduces friction, leading to a reduction in pain and inflammation.

These include pain at the injection site, knee pain, a feeling of warmth, and swelling of the knee. More rare side effects include skin rash and itching, infected knee joint, flushed face and swollen lips, headache, dizziness, muscle pain, calf cramps, nausea, pain on one side of the body with nausea, tiredness, and anxiety, and a rapid heartbeat. This injectable could cause an allergic reaction with shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and hives, and since the ingredients of this product come from chicken combs, if your patients have a bird, egg, or feather allergy, they should not get it injections. Other contraindications include a knee infection, skin infection in the injection area, blood clots, and circulation problems especially in the legs. The effect of this injectable on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding is not known.

This injectable is designed to deliver relief from osteoarthritis pain with one single injection. In a clinical trial, many patients experienced maximum relief from their osteoarthritis symptoms about a month after receiving an injection.

After application, most people continue to experience osteoarthritis relief for about six months, and at that time, you can give your patient another injection if they wish.
